Your summer coffee spots

Back to articles

If you’re hitting the road this summer and travelling out of town, you’ll be needing to know where to get a good brew. Lucky for you, we’ve got inside knowledge. From north to south, these are some of the best coffee spots to visit this summer.

View of Drop In Supply from the outside – a black shed-like building with a single pitch roof

Drop In Supply – Kaitaia

What’s better than a surf shop in summer? A surf shop that sells great coffee. These legends opened their doors in September and have been caffeinating locals and visitors ever since. From surfboards, to sun hats to summer threads, it’s a lovely spot to browse while you’re seeking refuge from the sun – especially with a coffee in hand.

Where: 153 Pukepoto Road, Kaitaia

Outside at The Farmers Daughter in Omaha. There are garden beds with people mixing and mingling around them, drinks in hand.

The Farmer’s Daughter – Omaha

For a beautiful outdoor space, it’s hard to go past The Farmer’s Daughter. Aside from serving up great coffee, they have incredible food, showcasing ingredients from local farmers, growers and artisans. Enjoy a bite to eat while sitting amongst the incredible garden, which overlooks the Omaha Estuary. It’s an idyllic summer spot.

Outside view of West Supply and West Supply Coffee. There is a Kōkako foothpath sign in the foreground.

West Supply Coffee – Waimauku

Located at the home of good times (West Supply), this place makes a pretty strong argument for the “west is best” rhetoric. A haven for campers, offroaders and all-round adventurers, you could spend hours browsing the gear here. Luckily there’s incredible coffee to fuel your shopping expedition.

Where: 5 Waimauku Station Road, Waimauku

Kōkako blade sign outside Nook Whitanga. There is a hanging pot plant with purple flowers in the foreground. In the background you can peek into the store and see shelves with groceries on them

Nook – Whitianga

If you’re lucky enough to find yourself in the Coromandel this summer, we recommend stopping into this grocer and refillery to pick up some supplies. From frozen berries, to pickles, to fresh produce and flowers – not to mention great coffee – Nook has got the goods! And did we mention you can get your tarot cards read there? We see great coffee in your future.

Where: 24A Albert Street, Whitianga

Colourful paintings and a bright yellow chair inside The Stoned Cow cafe

The Stoned Cow – Raglan

Nestled in this surf town is a coffee spot that’s a riot of colour, textures and patterns thanks to the work of local artists – it’s as much a treat for the eyes as it is for the stomach. Stop in for a coffee, a light meal or home-baked treats after a surf. Oh, and bring your dog! Four-legged friends are welcome inside here.

Waffles loaded with ice cream, sprinkles and banana slices

The Wallow – Whangamatā

In Whangamatā for a good time, not a long time is this epic food truck. Find them slinging Kōkako coffee as well as waffles and sliders ‘til January 14. Don’t mind if we do.

Where: Beach Road Reserve, Whangamatā

Outside of Locale coffee shop. Yellow couches outside.

Locale – Mount Maunganui

If you fancy a break from the sun and surf, Mount Maunganui has plenty more to offer, not the least of which are some excellent shops. If you’re hitting the retail scene, you’ll be in need of a good brew to fuel your spree, so it’s a good thing the Neon Collective has Locale, a little coffee shop serving up the good stuff to shoppers and coffee lovers alike.

Where: 176 Maunganui Road, Mount Maunganui

2 people enjoying a coffee outside Herb + Olive

Herb & Olive – Blenheim

In the heart of Marlborough wine country, you’ll find this cosy wholefood cafe, offering quality brews as well as nourishing food made with locally sourced ingredients, including organic vegetables grown by owners. It’s a perfect spot to visit for something wholesome – especially after an indulgent Christmas!

Outside of Billy's Espresso – there are blankets on the chairs

Billy’s Espresso – Queenstown

Located just a few minutes from Queenstown airport, this is the spot to go for a quality brew after getting off the plane. With our Mahana blend served from a custom La Marzocco KB90, our Aotea blend on a Modbar, rotating single origins on filter and Nitro Cold Brew on tap, coffee lovers will be spoiled for choice.

Green tiled wall with a black coffee machine

EBB Cafe – Dunedin

Run by writer and chef, Alison Lambert, Ebb-Cafe serves local and seasonal food along with some seriously good coffee. With an atrium garden exhibiting local and national artists, it’s a lovely place to enjoy some good food with good company.
