An update from Kōkako's GM, Dan Lacey

Back to articles

As we get stuck into 2025, we wanted to check in with you all and share a message from our General Manager, Dan Lacey.

We are now well and truly into our tenure as the new custodians of Kōkako Organic Coffee Roasters. I want to begin by acknowledging the incredible legacy built by Mike Murphy over the years. Mike and his team have built a purpose-led coffee brand that is a community of people like you; people who genuinely believe in something and who want to bring fairness and equity to the coffee industry.

As when Mike took over from the previous kaitiaki, Mike’s departure marks a new chapter for Kōkako. Our commitment to the values, quality, and community spirit that Kōkako represents remains steadfast. We are here to honor what has been built and to ensure that every cup of Kōkako coffee continues to reflect sustainability, ethical sourcing, and the uncompromising quality you’ve come to love.

We’re thrilled to share that we’ve recently passed our Fairtrade and BioGro Organic certification audits. These certifications reaffirm our commitment to sourcing coffee in a way that supports fair wages, sustainable farming practices, and environmentally conscious production. This is a testament to our ongoing mission to create a positive impact for coffee growers and their communities while delivering a product that’s both delicious and ethical.

In our ongoing pursuit of sustainability and quality, we’ve made a significant upgrade to our roastery by investing in a Loring Smart Roaster. This cutting-edge technology uses up to 80% less fuel compared to our previous roaster, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reducing the impact we make on the environment. We’ve also invested in additional equipment that will streamline our packing process, allowing us to absorb more of the rising costs while maintaining consistency. These investments are a reflection of our commitment to minimizing our environmental impact while improving how we serve you.

As we look to the future, we’re excited to continue exploring new ways to grow and innovate while staying true to the principles that have guided Kōkako from the beginning. We’re deeply grateful for your support, trust, and feedback as we navigate this journey together. Thank you for being part of the Kōkako story - one that’s rooted in quality, care, and a vision for a more sustainable world, one cup at a time.

Ngā mihi nui,

Dan Lacey
