We're super lucky to be part of a dynamic and progressive coffee industry. A couple of weeks ago we participated in the NZSCA annual general meeting which was held at the incredible Sherwood in Queenstown. Congratulations to all award recipients and our new NZSCA Board which is led by the legend, Megan Wyper of ACME.
Heading down gave us the opportunity to check in with a few of our outposts in the region and take some time to appreciate the amazing landscape our southern friends get to enjoy every day. If you’re lucky enough to be heading south, here's a few spots we'd highly recommend!
Billy's Espresso is a few minutes from Queenstown Airport at the entrance to the Five Mile Shopping precinct. It’s the perfect post-flight spot for every conceivable Kōkako coffee iteration; serving our Mahana blend from a custom La Marzocco KB90, our Aotea on a Modbar, single origin filter and Nitro Cold Brew on tap.
Owners, Bevan and Felicity are seasoned café veterans, having run a successful café in Bondi Beach. They moved across the ditch with their young son to launch Billy’s, which is named after their pet bulldog.
As you'd expect (given the namesake), Billy’s is dog-friendly, has a vegetarian, gluten free and vegan friendly menu, and is the perfect spot to fill up your coffee bean canister or Keep Cup before heading out on your next adventure.
Just 15 minutes down the road you’ll find Nadia Lim's Royalburn Farm Shop in Arrowtown. It’s packed with fresh local organic produce and an excellent range of artisanal food and beverage products from the region. Fill your pack with quality provisions and snacks before hitting the road.
Further south in picturesque Glenorchy, you’ll find a very special spot to base yourself for your next adventure – the gateway to countless DOC walks, including the stunning Routeburn Track. The Great Glenorchy Alpine Basecamp is a purpose-built spot to base yourself for your next wilderness adventure, whether you’re there for a short walk or a more serious guided alpine escape organised by the team.
The architecturally designed cabins come in multiple configurations, with options of bunk beds or doubles with ensuites. You can decompress in the onsite sauna after your hike, then head to the restaurant for a family-style meal and local wine on tap. Hosts Doug, Liz, Andy, John and Maddie will make you feel like old mates and you won’t want to leave. Fuel up with a cup of Kōkako Aotea blend over breakfast before you hit the trails.
